Anyone who has ever taken a long car trip knows the value of road signs. They tell you that you are on the right road and how much farther you need to travel. They help you decide when stops are necessary. And they tell you something about the places through which you’re traveling. The 2008 State of the Workforce report by the Indianapolis Private Industry Council serves the same purpose for those interested in the workforce and economic development. It tracks long-term progress; clarifies current circumstances; and describes emerging challenges. We spend most of our days negotiating the curves in the road immediately before us. But to truly progress, we must, from time to time, take a long view of where we are going.
