In number terms, there are more low-income white households than black or Hispanic. But a larger share of both black and Hispanic households earn less than $25,000. Similarly, at high wages, white households are more numerous, though other minority ethnicities also are represented. The chart shows a similar pattern for each of the groups listed. Low incomes are common among households of each group. Social concerns associated with low incomes cannot be linked only to minorities, since most low-income people are white. High incomes are enjoyed by only a slim share of people, regardless of their race or ethnicity. In the chart, the number of high-income blacks, Hispanics and Asians seems nearly invisible, because of the scale of the chart. The following page looks at the same data in percentage terms. |
