Marion County’s overall high school graduation rate was 73 percent in the 2005-06 academic year. The rate varies significantly among the county’s schools. The data table ranks high schools by their graduation rates. The information is supplied by the Indiana Department of Education and reflects performance in 2005-06.
The 28 schools listed here can be divided into three groups: private schools, public schools in the townships and the schools of the Indianapolis Public Schools system. Those three groups perform distinctly. All private schools graduate more than 90 percent of their students; the townships graduate between 60 percent and 80 percent; and all but one of the IPS schools graduate fewer than 60 percent. The exception is Broad Ripple High School, which graduates 72 percent of students.4
4 Readers will observe that the graduation rate and the dropout rate do not sum up to 100 percent. This is because there are other possible outcomes at the end of a student’s fourth year in high school. He or she may leave school with a GED or other certificate, or he may continue school for a fifth year. In some schools, as many as 18 percent of seniors are classified as “still in school” at the end of their fourth year. |
