Indiana: Jobless rate lowest since '01
June 19, 2007

By Staff Report
Indianapolis Star

Indiana recorded an unemployment rate of 4.5 percent for May, the lowest mark in nearly six years, officials said today.

The state's May unemployment rate decreased from 4.8 percent in April, according to figures released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

A year ago at this time, Indiana's rate was 5.1 percent. The state says that total employment for May, seasonally-adjusted, is estimated at 2.9 million, up 5,200 from May 2006.

The last time it was this low was September 2001.

Earlier today, the government released a Bureau of Labor Statistics report showing that Indiana lost 2,100 jobs from April to May, the fourth-highest figure nationally. The reason for the discrepancy was not immediately clear, but the BLS figures prompted complaints from Democrats.
