LABOR MARKET STUDIES Labor market studies provide information about industries important to Central Indiana in terms of their contribution to the regional economy and the number of workers they employ. The studies, by definition, consider the demand side of workforce development - the needs of businesses for a skilled labor force that will help them grow. IPIC's seven studies of 10 important industries cover nearly 70 percent of all non-government jobs in Central Indiana. When IPIC embarked on the studies, we chose to focus on nine counties in Central Indiana that are inextricably linked economically and socially: Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Morgan and Shelby. While much of the federal and philanthropic funding that IPIC receives is restricted to use in Marion County, we are keenly aware that the Marion County economy does not operate in a vacuum. Residents of Marion County and its neighbors work, shop, socialize, visit and sell goods or services throughout the region, with little heed to county lines. Workers think nothing of going to work in a neighboring county, or beyond, every day. Few companies would decline to do business with a client in another county. As an organization, therefore, we have embraced regionalism, and we hope that the information contained in these comprehensive reports will enable those interested in workforce issues throughout the region to understand them more fully, act on them more decisively and plan for the future more deliberately.
